Local Riding Zones

Smithers and the Bulkley Valley offer an incredible variety of mountain biking, from accessible family-friendly trails to long, technical descents. Below are some of the main riding zones locals and visitors alike love to ride.

Smithers

Trail development and maintenance in Smithers is led by the Smithers Mountain Bike Association .

  • The Bluff Recreation Site – The most popular riding zone for locals. Expect lots of pedaling and no shuttle access.
    • Classic Loop: Pedal up to the top, then ride Shining → Smoothie → Auntie Flo.
  • Ptarmigan Trails – Two trails that can be shuttled or accessed via a mellow pedal up a logging road.
  • Piperdown Recreation Site – Three shuttle-accessible trails starting from the Hudson Bay Mountain ski area.
  • Backdoor – Often considered Smithers’ best descent, running from the ski hill all the way into town. Note: this trail is currently unsanctioned.
  • Cronin Pass – A classic alpine-style adventure ride connecting Smithers to the Telkwa Valley. This route involves a long climb, high-alpine exposure, and changing weather conditions. Riders are rewarded with incredible views and a long, memorable descent. Best attempted by experienced riders who are comfortable with self-supported riding and route-finding.

Houston

Trails in Houston are developed and maintained by the Houston Mountain Bike Association .

Mt. Harry Davis is being thoughtfully developed with an emphasis on accessibility and rider progression. There is a dedicated family zone featuring three short trails and an easy uptrack, encouraging even brand-new riders to give mountain biking a try.

At the top of the family zone, you’ll find a large shelter that’s in the process of getting a wood-fired pizza oven. If you’re new to mountain biking, Houston is a fantastic place to start. Please remember to sign the trail register at the shelter so the HMBA can track use from visiting riders.

Hazelton

Trail work in Hazelton is supported by the Hazelton Trail Society .

Hazelton’s trails sit at the edge of the coastal rainforest, and you can feel the change in terrain immediately. These trails are often the first to dry out in the Bulkley Valley each spring.

While there are several cross-country style trails, downhill riders shouldn’t miss Back2School and NAME—two must-ride descents in the area.
